How do we know that the 20% is half of computer skills. Point 1 says of those companies surveyed that require computer skills… What if the companies surveyed is 50% of the companies. That would make ONLY computer skills to be 30%. Why is it guaranteed that half of the computer skills =20%?
GMAT Quantum says
Hi Lisa,
“What if the companies surveyed is 50% of the companies.” Here please note that we are only including companies that were surveyed, meaning the percentages that we are given is of companies that were included in the survey. The question excludes the companies that were not part of the survey. This is clear from the following pieces: “Of the companies surveyed about the skills they required in prospective employees…” and “Of those companies surveyed that required…”.
I will try another way to explain statement 1. If we look at the category of companies that require computer skills, then this category can be further divided in to two parts. One is requiring only computer skills, and the other writing skills in addition to computer skills. We are told that number of companies requiring writing skills in addition to computer skills is half, that means the other half is the number of companies that require only computer skills. Because the category computer skills and writing skills is 20%, the other category of computer skills alone must also be 20%.
I hope this is clear. Sometimes, writing an explanation does not make things absolutely clear and if that is the case, I can create a video explanation to elaborate this point.
